Canon’s new Speedlite rollout for the EOS R generation has been a bit messy. The first Speedlite announced for the lineup was the entry-level EL-100. Which felt like a bit like a half-baked attempt to address the line. There’s nothing wrong with it for $149, but the missing rear display always irks us.

The second Speedlite that came was the very expensive Speedlite EL-1, at the time of writing this, the flash is still priced at $1099 USD.

The next Speedlite was the EL-5, which was announced back in November of 2023, but didn’t start shipping until May of this year. It’s priced reasonably at $399, but it comes with the big caveat of not being compatible with the EOS R5.

We have been told that it is likely we’ll see a Speedlite EL-10 announced later this year. It’ll be smaller than the EL-5, and have a “new trick”, which wasn’t articulated. It will have a rear display unlike the Speedlite EL-100.

We always enjoyed the 470-AI with its tricks, and we hope to see something similar added to the lineup in the future.
